DeKalb man indicted for blowing up Decatur ATM, stealing $88K, scouting more ATMs

October 11, 2023

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Abdurrahim Jalal’s alleged crime spree involving the detonation of an ATM in Decatur, Georgia, in March 2023, has taken a new turn with federal authorities charging him with additional offenses. The explosion not only shook the local community but also caught the attention of federal agencies, leading to a significant investigation.

In the early hours of March 29, 2023, Jalal allegedly used a pipe bomb to blow up an ATM at the Bank of America near North DeKalb Mall in Decatur. The explosive blast caused significant damage to the machine, and Jalal reportedly made off with approximately $88,000, comprising $42,320 in twenty-dollar bills and $13,160 in ten-dollar bills. The crime left a trail of destruction and posed a grave threat to public safety.

The aftermath of the ATM explosion prompted a swift response from law enforcement agencies. Investigators identified Jalal as the prime suspect and obtained a warrant to search his residence.

During the search, they discovered additional destructive devices, further intensifying the gravity of the situation. The evidence collected during this investigation laid the foundation for Jalal’s indictment by a federal grand jury on September 12, 2023.

A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agent filed a federal court complaint revealing that Jamal also scouted several other ATMs in the Atlanta area. Each ATM location he visited stood near intersections and had easy highway access.

The federal indictment against him includes charges related to both the ATM explosion and the possession of illegal explosive devices. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan expressed the serious nature of these charges, emphasizing the danger posed by the unlawful use and possession of explosives to citizens and first responders.

Buchanan stated, “This indictment is the culmination of investigative work conducted by a team of federal and local law enforcement agencies who recovered bombing materials from Jalal’s home and may have prevented additional explosions.”

Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta Keri Farley said, “The alleged actions of this individual could have led to innocent people being seriously hurt or killed. This investigation is proof of the strength and tenacity of the FBI and its law enforcement partners in eliminating acts of violence which threaten the communities we serve.”

One striking aspect of this case is the collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The investigation involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the DeKalb County Police Department, and the DeKalb County Fire Rescue. This partnership demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to work together to safeguard communities.

DeKalb Police Chief Mirtha V. Ramos stated, “This indictment comes as a result of the strong partnerships that exist between local, state, and federal agencies. Working together, we can continue to keep our streets safe.”

Jalal’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and fostering partnerships between law enforcement, schools, faith communities, and local leaders. By focusing on individuals who significantly contribute to violence in their communities, PSN seeks to prevent and deter future criminal conduct.

It is important to note that an indictment represents allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
